RELATIVE PRONOUNS "WHEN" AND "WHERE"

1) WHEN
Dialog: "On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth."

The pronoun "when" can be used at the beginning of a relative clause when referring to time. It replaces the more formal use of preposition + which.

  • Rebecca was looking forward to the day when she and her husband would move out of the house that held so many sad memories. (more formal: the day on which)
  • Halloween is a time when people's "creative spirits" flow. (more formal: a time at which)
  • Do you know the date when that serial killer's trial is set? (more formal: the date on which)

2) WHERE
Dialog: "Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities."

The pronoun "where" can also be used at the beginning of a relative clause when referring to location. It replaces the more formal use of preposition + which.

  • This is the street where the Halloween parade happens every year. (more formal: the street on which)
  • That house over there is where the serial killer tortured his victims before killing them. (more formal: the house at which)
  • San Francisco is a city where there is never a lack of things to do on Halloween. (more formal: a city in which)

Sobre esta aula

The tradition of Halloween dates back to as long as 2000yrs ago, when a people called the Celts inhabited northwestern Europe. Hard to imagine the kids of that time dressing up as witches and ghosts and hopping from door to door begging for candy? Well, uh it wasn’t exactly like that. Check out this podcast and listen to Ashley and Josh as they tell the tale of Samhain...
